The mustard originated in East Asia and Japan and later spread to India, North America and Europe. It is considered one of the oldest trees in the world. It arrived in Greece in the 19th century.ο It was intended to decorate gardens and parks, because it is a beautiful tree, tall, with green, long leaves and colourful fruits. In Cephalonia they are called mespola in Kefalonia, in Corfu and Paxos they are called nespola and in Crete they are called δέσπολα. There are two varieties of muskmelia, one with round fruits and the other with slightly long fruits. When unripe they are yellow-orange in colour and when ripe they are brown. It has 2-3 hard and shiny pips that take up space in the flesh but become an excellent Liqueur!

It is a very delicate fruit and when we buy it we have to be careful, it should not be unripe because it doesn't taste good and it should not be too ripe because it will spoil easily.

To clean them, steam them for a few minutes.

The berries are low in calories, help in weight loss and contain iron, calcium, magnesium, antioxidants, vitamins A, C, fiber.

The marmulas are made into chutney, delicious jam, poultry sauce and liqueur
